Privacy policy

This privacy statement discloses the privacy practices of the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) concerning your use of the Satoyama Development Mechanism (SDM) Website at https://sdm.satoyama-initiative.org/ (“Website”), including application for the SDM.

UNU-IAS is an integral part of the United Nations University (UNU) and serves as a secretariat for the SDM jointly with the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES). UNU-IAS is committed to the privacy of individuals who interact with this Website and abides by the following practices.

Acquisition of personal information

UNU-IAS collects personal information from Website users in various ways, including personal information from the SDM applicants and the SDM grant recipients. UNU is the sole owner of personal information collected on this Website. UNU-IAS will not sell or rent this information to others, or share it in any manner, in ways different from the practices disclosed in this Privacy Policy.

Purpose of use of personal information

UNU-IAS uses the IP address from your Internet connection to analyze trends, administer the Website, track user movements and gather broad geographic information for aggregate use. IP addresses are not linked to any personally identifiable information.

Personal information submitted by the SDM applicants and grant recipients, including their names, addresses and contacts, shall be processed in accordance with UNU’s Policy on Personal Data Protection.

Third party provision of personal information

UNU-IAS may share personal information with IGES for the purpose of carrying out the activities of the SDM operation including:

  • (a) Selecting SDM projects;

  • (b) Making contracts with selected project implementation organisations;

  • (c) Distributing SDM funding to project implementation organisations;

  • (d) Following-up on, and conducting monitoring and evaluation of project implementation;

  • (e) Collecting, organising and disseminating knowledge from implemented projects; and

  • (f) Reporting on the above activities to the Executive Board of SDM.

This provision is made provided that:

  • (a) Under the circumstances, IGES affords an appropriate level of security and protection for personal data in light of the principles of UNU’s Policy on Personal Data Protection;

  • (b) Transfers of personal data are limited to the minimum necessary to fulfil the specified and legitimate purposes;

  • (c) Appropriate measures are in place to safeguard the transmission of personal data; and

  • (d) The method of transmission is proportionate to the nature and sensitivity of personal data

This information will not be shared with any other entity.
